On teaching corp office women how to role play:
I work in payroll, its fascinating(its not). My department is part of a bigger corp office(but not that big) for a janitorial company started in 1969 by a now out of touch man named Don Aslet. Most of the ppl I work with are women over 40 and they are great women. So when they told me they needed help picking the names for their dnd characters I admit, I was taken a bit off guard. Now, the two that approched me are the youngest after me so it wasn't that peculiar but they still would never strike anyone as a member of the Gygax Gang. One, a paralegal who loved to run, Heather (real names not changed privacy), and the other, our work comp gal, Taysha. They had been told by someone that they should attend the local comic con, maybe to support the community? idk, we live in Pocatello ID, and the biggest name at last years local con was 'Zombie Kid" Some random kid that dresses like a zombie? idk that either but I digress. They decided that if they were to go, they wold need to dress up. looking up pictures online, they soon realized that if they dressed up in some kind cosplay, people might ask them about it so this is where Harley comes in. Our IT guy who plays weekly at the local adventurers league(dnd shit). He told them they could dress as a dnd character and just play a session so they knew what they were talking about if asked. The plan was set!
Taysha took a quiz, it told her she would be level 5 Human Druid, good alignment, and she found a picture to go with it(see visual aid, unless i forget to put it in)
Heather not to be outdone found a picture as well, stating confidently "I dont think I need a quiz, I want to be like a fire sorceress!" (instert pic again)
the next tragedy was they needed to know how to pick a name. I gave them some racial examples but in the end told them the sky was the limit. They didnt understand that, more ground rules were needed. A whole day of emails goes by before names are chosen (they still arent really chosen, its two days later and I am still getting emails with different elven names the email count has to at least be 40 by now)
I was asked to Dungeon Master for them and gave in, after all this would be too funny to miss out on. I sent them this reply
"Okay great, you are all level 5,
here are your character sheets to fill out lol be ready, you will all start on
a deserted forest path leading up to a cave where the ground is littered with
the bones of other creatures and some even look suspiciously human. A
nearby sign says something in elvish, you will have to get closer to try and
read, good luck. Lol ;)"
To which they send me:
"Like this?"
I almost died. It was incredible, some of the best visual aid from someone who had obviously used paint and stock pictures from lord of the rings, I had EVER seen, and that is how I knew that this would be a grand adventure indeed...
